Editorial Review :

Automotive Code Readers retrieve trouble and pending codes and display their definitions on-screen in plain English. Code Readers are ideal for capturing manufacturer trouble codes. Trouble codes identify the component or system that has failed. The EZ-Read Code Readers are the most user-friendly, cost-efficient and portable OBD-I and OBD-II Code Readers available. With an EZ-Read 2000, users can access the same information dealers use on 83 and newer domestic and 96 and newer import vehicles.

Customer Review :

AutoXray EZ-Read 2000- Did not like it.

You can get a code reader cheaper than this one. A lot of the functions on the unit like 'MON' and 'DATA' buttons require an upgrade for $99. The unit did not come with cable to link it to a computer to do the upgrade, you also have to purchase that.

AutoXray EZ read 2000

Shipping of the ez read 2000 was very quick and the Ez read 2000 works as advertized. Used it to clear my check engine light from problem I corrected a year ago with the egr, and have used it several times on friends and family vehicles to pinpoint problems. The unit works very well and is user friendly. A fee will be charged for the upgrades to a scanner etc., but the upgradeable feature is the reason I purchased it.

Cables are of excellent quality

Not what I expected

This code reader performs well. I like the case and all the items supplied. What is lacking is information. Yes it reads and displays codes, but codes without explanation are of little value. I inquired by e-mail to the manufacturer about cost of code descriptions but the reply was lacking in explaining how to obtain same. The reply did note that the particular code I asked about was related to emission controls but that is too broad an explanation to isolate a problem. You can buy upgrades for the code reader but description of what you get is also vague, therefore anyone buying an upgrade would not know what they were getting.
On the plus side I was able to find code descriptions on the internet but it was not easy. Once I had the code I bought and replaced the defective part and the problem was solved. Calling a dealer and inquiring about the cost of replacing the same part revealed I saved over 50% of their price, and I included the cost of the reader. Therefore it was a true bargain, but without the code description would have been of little value.

Recently got a check engine light on our 01 Explorer Sport. Followed the straightforward instructions, and got the codes no problem. Used the update button, and both the software and the firmware on the unit were upgraded from the internet, no problems. This unit does exactly what it says it will, and does it well.

Question : 2000 acura integra gs-r OBD II diagnostic code help (P1456)?
hey, i used an obd II scanner on my vehicle and it says that there is a problem with the evaporative emission control system leak in fuel system. anyone have any ideas on where i should start looking for this problem. or perhaps what the problem might be? thank you very much. ~ryan

Answer:
Quite frequently a loose gas cap. tighten the cap and clear the code by using the scanner.to turn off the lite. The trouble lite won't go ouy by just fixing the problem. If the problem still exists the lite will be back after a while.

Question : Diagnostics?
Why do people think a diagnostic of a vehicle with a running problem is nothing more than "pulling with a scanner" a "code"? Doing diagnostics for over 20 yrs now, just because a code is in the computer doesn't mean that part is bad. So why then does Autozone sell you a part just because it has for example a code for an O2 sensor? Does that mean than you are going to buy a transmission because it sets a trans code? Trained techs do more than pull a code, charge you 80 bucks and put a part in, because most are not the fault of a sensor. If you get your "free" scan from autozone and it doesn't fix your complaint, does autozone stand behind you and let you return a electrical part?

Answer:
yes , good points both of you , also what a lot of people ( techs and tourists ) forget is that under all the wiring and sensors is an internal combustion engine , how many sensors and computers have been replaced when bent push rods or collapsed compression rings are the true culprit ? i took automotives in school ( while the earth was still cooling ) and saw that the industry was going to be in turmoil for many years until the electronic stuff was sorted out so i kept auto repair as a hobby , my hat is off to you guys that need a degree in computer science as well as knowing how to best beat apart a reluctant ball joint.

Question : What is the legal responsibility of a automotive shop in the following cases?
Read plz The tech checked system with scanner and found hte knock sensor failure. Found no other problem. Recommed replace knock sensor. Replaced knock sensor, retested system found no further problems. Tech Rotates tires, changed oil and inspected brake hoses and lines. No problems found. The service light returned two days later. The customer returned on the third day. The tech servicing the vehicle stated the code was different and would not be covered by warranty. The customer Ok'ed the second repair for the check engine light. Driving home, the customer noticed the light returned. The customer complained the light is on for a third time, and requested the problem should be taken care of by the shop. The technician checked the vehicle an and stated the ingine code is different from te previous two and the customer had to pay for the repair. Q 1.Legal responsi of the shop/customer? 2. What mistakes made on repair order? 3.Who dropped the ball. 4.How prevent legal action

Answer:
If the engine code was different each time, the customer should pay for the repairs. Sorry. 3 engine lights with differing codes in a short period of time might just be a case of bad luck and timing.

How many receipt-less voting machines are used nation-wide?

Answer:
you cant be serious, there is no way to know since they come and go, and give it up. That was years ago and its a moot point. Get on with life and forget it now.

Question : 04 explorer keeps shutting of wont start now?
used obd 2 scanner no error codes came up can start engine to check sensors. battery is fine engine does crank had to drive vehicle about ten miles home engine shutt off about 4 times on the way home got into the drive way poped the hood then shut off again got my reader out couldnt get it started again fuel filter changed out checked fuel pump out put looks like plenty of pressure dont have fuel pressure guage though. thinking possibly distrubtor. engine sounds like it want to fire but no go Got the solution. bolt came loose and cut wiring harness shorting out the system.

Answer:
Spray starting fluid in the air intake and if it starts, you've got a fuel delivery problem like fuel filter or fuel pump etc. Check for good spark with the spark tester below. http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=41 http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=BK&PartNumber=7002456&Description=Electronic+Ignition+Spark+Tester

Question : How to check DTC's for power steering on a 2004 Chevy Malibu?
I am trying to pull the DTC's for the electronic power steering on a 2004 Chevy Malibu (V6) and was wondering if the vehicle had a way to pull the codes without a scanner. I know that some GM vehicles require shorting 2 pins on the OBD connector, others have you hold the odometer reset button when turning the key on... Right now, I'm getting a warning for the steering and am trying to determine whether this is a serious issue or something that I can fix / replace. I'd rather save the $100.00 to have the code pulled by the dealer. Thanks!

Answer:
Forget the DTC's. If you have a Malibu with the electric steering take it to a dealer. This is not an item that a shadetree mechanic should be messing with. There is a history of problems with this system and they may even give you warranty if you yell loud enough.

Question : my appologies for not being more spacific?
this is on my 1994 chevy s10 truck the truck runs and on occasion it decides to stop running, its not throwing any trouble codes at all but the vehicles computer will not talk to my scanner and when in self diagnostic mode it only sends acknowledgment code, and that is all when it dies it usualy after being driven.ive replaced pugs, cap, rotorcap and ignition modual.fuel pressure is supposed to be good as stated this is intermitent, because there is no warning when it does it and it stays down for at a minimum of a half an hour to a hole day

Answer:
The computer sounds bad happened the exact same thing to my friends Beretta

Question : When a 94 Acura Legend LS gets a tuneup what is done besides changing the spark plugs? Want to do my own. Thx
Where can I buy an OBD scanner/code reader for 94 Legend? I hear the OBD II scanners only work on 96 and newer vehicles. Lots of double talk from the local tuneup techs. Heck, I can change the plugs if that is all they do since they claim they can't read the codes with the OBD II scanner/reader. Can someone who has tuned up a 91-95 Legend give me the steps and I'll try it myself. I was quoted $28.95 per plug(x 6) and enough labor to make the final price be $230. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Answer:
Ouch. Pricey. A tune up would consist of plugs, rotor, distributor cap and maybe the plug wires (if it is still the originals I would seriously consider it after 12 years) Also change the air cleaner and pcv filter (or unit). Plugs are cheaper than that. Go to an autoparts store for your stuff. It does not have to Acura factory parts. They overcharge (like every dealer). This will do you fine, for alot less. Do change the plugs when the engine is cold(like overnight cold).

Question : Someone help ID the code from an OBD-II Scanner?
We used an OBD-II scanner to identify the problem on our '98 Chevy Astro Van. The code it gave was P1351. The vehicle won't start/run. We have looked online for the code ID but all the codes we get are for a 3.1 engine. We need the code for a 4.3 ENGINE. Is there any way you can pin-point exactly what the problem is? or know where we can find the code's ID?
