Question : Meaning for this "service engine soon" code for 1997 Blazer?
My fiance and I took his Blazer (1997, auto trans, V6) to Autozone and used their code reader because his service engine soon light has been on for a couple days. The code reader said "P1870" and below that it said "Manufacturer Control Transmission." Does anyone know what this means, or where we can look it up?

Answer:
Depending on which transmission you have, you could have a faulty TFP (Transmission Fluid Pressure) valve position sensor that is bad but before you do that you need to check the condition of the fluid, ie: burnt or smells bad.

Question : I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse and need to check OBDI codes without a code reader, how do I go about this?
The diagnostic terminal is a 12 pin with a ground and the others for......who knows. I have heard that I can ground the one terminal and touch the other terminals to start to get my "check engine light" to begin reading codes. I understand there is a way to do this without a code reader using some wire but my previous question receiving no valid responses, please help. Also, please don't tell me to go to Autozone to check codes, they only check 1994 and newer vehicles...aka...OBDII.

Answer:
Just disconnect your battery for about 20 minutes. It resets the computer. If the light turns on again after driving it for a while, you might need a new oxygen sensor.

Question : 02 Expedition Check Engine Light Comes on with no code
The check engine light comes on and after putting a code reader on it, it has no fault code. The readings for the Throttle position sensor and MAFS was high and I have just replace those and after about 30 miles of driving, the check engine light came back on. It does not flash, just comes on and stays on steady, even when engine is first started. What else is there to check, and where would I find "normal" readings for the engine at an idle?

Question : How to get diagnostic trouble code w/o a reader/device?
I have a 2001 Corolla with the check engine lite on. I understand how to reset it by temporarily removing the fuse. But, aside from taking it to the shop, how can I find out which trouble code(s) are causing the lite to go on. I seem to remember there is a trick involving using a paperclip to make a connection of some kind which triggers the engine lite to flash--by counting the flashes you can find out the code #s. Anyone know exactly how to do this? Thx. OK, I see from two answers that both say the paperclip method won't work on my car. And do I understand 'Married Couple' to be saying that Autozone will use the scanner and provide me with the reading for free? That would be great if they (or anybody else) did that. Married_Couple: I called AutoZone and confimed they do lend out the scanner free with deposit. Thanks very much for your help!

Answer:
the paper clip trick is for the old GM OBD-1 system. AutoZone will tell you what the code is for free.

Question : 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5s makes noise when accelerating coming from under the engine i think?
If on park and i press on the gas the noise does not appear, however, when driving the noise can be heard coming from the engine, only when accelerating as if some rattling/air noise is coming from under the engine. I have no clue what is causing the sound, i hook up a code reader to see if any code would appear and nothing. You can definately hear the noise more when going up hill. Once again the noise is a blowing/rattling/clicking noise when accelerating

Answer:
Check your exhaust under the car, some times little stones can get stuck in the exhaust shields and can cause rattles which sound horrible.

Question : My 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan is sputtering. New fuel injector needed?
I have a 1998 Grand Caravan, 3.8 liter, 80,000 miles. A month ago my car started hesitating and sputtering. The sputtering got so bad that the car wouldn’t even accelerate when I gave it gas, acting like it was flooded with fuel. It even backfired a little and produced a heavy fuel smell inside and outside the car. The “Service Engine Soon” light came on and I took it to the mechanic so they could read the trouble code. The “engine code reader” said that there was a problem with the fuel injector in the fifth cylinder and that the fuel injector was misfiring. The mechanics first replaced the spark plugs and spark plug cables. A few days later tho, the “Service Engine” light came on again with the same trouble code. They replaced the fuel injector in the 5th cylinder and again we got the same trouble code: bad fuel injector in the 5th cylinder. They then replaced the ignition coil, but this did not solve the problem either. The mechanics are baffled. Can you help?

Answer:
Mine did the same thing. It was the fuel filter which was located inside the fuel tank.

Question : I used an OBD2 code reader on my 2001 Nissian Maxima and the following codes showed up...?
The following codes showed up: PO420-catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1) and PO430-catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 2). I don't know much about cars. What does that mean? It has caused my sevice engine light appear

Answer:
Nice you have a code reader. Anyway....it means both oxygen sensors are detecting somthing they shouldn't. It doesn't necesarrily mean they need to be replace. I would get a tune up done and go from there. Before you take in for a tune up reset the ecu. A lot mechs will disagree with me here, but my reasoning is to keep from being told you replace a bunch of things you don't need replace. A bad pvc valve would cause the O2 sensors to have a bad reading (catch my drift). Start with tune up especially if you haven't had one done in a while.

Question : Where can I find an affordable ($30 to $50) digital display OBD1 code reader for a 1990 Chrylser New Yorker?
I'am tired of attempting to count the check engine flashes, they are not always accurate as its difficult to distinguish the pauses. I want a digital display that reads it out but don't want to spend a fortune with a universal reader. They used to make them years ago just for Chrysler cars, now I cant find them anywhere

Answer:
i own a shop, and i know what you mean bout counting flashes, advance auto parts has a simple reader for around 30 bucks that works pretty well, they usually make it a lot easier to read, counting the flashes isn't any fun,but give advance a call, they have what your looking for, good luck with it hope this helps.

Question : My Check Engine Ligh is on. Does anyone know what this code means?
I drive a 1998 Ford Explorer V6 4.0 Liter and my Check Engine Light has been on for about a week now. There have been no problems (yet) with how my vehicle is running. I had my neighbor who is a mechanic check the code for me and the code that appears on his reader is P1405. Does anyone know what this code means and/or what needs to be done to my truck? Also, could this be a serious problem to where I should be driving my truck as little as possible until it is fixed?

Answer:
DTC P1405: INSPECT UPSTREAM PRESSURE HOSE CONNECTIONS Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1405 indicates that Continuous Memory Self-Test has detected the exhaust manifold side (upstream) differential pressure feedback D.P.F. EGR sensor pressure hose is off or plugged. Possible causes: Improper upstream pressure hose connection. Upstream pressure hose plugged. Plugged or damaged pressure pickup tubes. Inspect upstream hose at D.P.F. EGR sensor and orifice tube assembly for disconnect or poor connection. Is hose off or poorly connected? Most likely your DPFE sensor has failed. This is a very common failure on ALL Ford products. If the the two DPFE hoses are good, go to your nearest Ford dealer parts department to purchase a DPFE sensor and replace it yourself. Disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds to erase the code. This job takes all of 10 minutes. Hope this helps.
