Question : My 1998 Ford Escort wont start?
I was driving on the free way and experienced a sudden loss of power, as i coasted off the freeway and came to a stop the engine died and wouldn't re-start. The motor turns over but wont fire. I changed spark plugs and wires, checked fuel filter for flowage and went down to Auto Zone and rented a diagnostic tool which tells me "PASS [no codes were detected]" I'm stumped and don't know what to do next. whats the easiest way to check the timing belt? I am also getting spark from the spark plug wires I removed the oil filler and looked down it while i turned the engine over and nothing moves in there.. i also noticed a square shaped chunk of metal cut out that i dont know if its supposed to be there or not

Answer:
You know why? Because its a 1998 Ford Escort, that's why!

Question : Can you go to autozone for them to diagnose a "service engline soon" light for free?
If not autozone, do any other auto places do that for free? and is it a companywide policy or decided by individual stores? When I say diagnose I mean simply hooking up the diagnostic thingy and showing what is wrong with it. And from your experience are diagnosis tools acurate in general?

Answer:
They will read the code(s) for free, and that is a company policy! They want to sell you the parts to fix your car, and if you go to a shop, the shop will get the parts from their own sources! The code will tell you what type of failure you have, but sometimes does not tell you the exact cause. Once you know what the code is, you can decide if it is something that you need to have a shop repair. The code readers are accurate and so valuable that I paid several thousand dollars for one and pay every few years to update it!!

Question : Shutting off warning lights on new Audi/VW autos.?
chalupas_and_beer ask this question a couple days ago and the answers were weak. What you need is a vagcom from Ross Tech. With this diagnostic tool which you connect to the obd-II and a laptop. You can read/reset all fault codes. And you can modify certain parameters. Such as turning off DRL, Remote window lowering, or log engine stats. It costs $150 and is worth every penny. You could also borrow one, TDIclub.com has a list of registered vagcom users who are willing to help. I know this is not a question but the previous answers did not answer the question. The correct answer is Vagcom.

Answer:
Yeah I feel like a Ross-tech salesman everytime I have to answer a stinkin CEL question because I have to do it every other time, and nobody listens. Its not a legit question posting but kudos anyway.

Question : Auto diagnostic training?
Hi everyone I'm looking for a training program that would teach me the skills i need to do engine diagnostics. I dont have much knowlege about it but my dad tells me its a good field to get into. I cant find anything usefull on the web but What i want to bassicaly do is purchase the diagnostic tools and software to connect them to my laptop and learn how to use it to determine what what is wrong with a car, I will not be repairing it just diagnosing it. Also I'm only interested in equipment for japanese and european cars. So if anyone can help me with ideas on how to get started with this, or references to courses, or even what tools I should get, please inform me that would help me out tremendously. Again thank you

Answer:
I work for Ford [which includes Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, Land rover etc] and getting a job as a diagnostics engineer is superb but very complex. This end of the diagnostics chain is best because you get to design the diagnostics capability of the system BUT as a diagnostics engineer for a garage, you just read codes [VERY EASY!] and say whats wrong, not much to it. Tools such as WDS/IDS [maybe Ford specific] are worth investigating, which read off diagnostics code and if you know the ECU Supplier, they can provide what the codes mean. I trust this helps? I would really appreciate it if you could please rate me as BEST ANSWER :-)

Question : I have a 1999 Ford Expedition that has some sort of grease coming out from behind the center cap.?
I have a 1999 Ford Expedition that has some sort of grease coming out from behind the center cap.? what is causing this? and is this making my ABS light stay on? the grease is coming from behind the left front center cap on the wheel, I have not taken the wheel off yet, I am pretty certain it is not brake fluid, unless it is brake fluid and dust mixed together?!?!?!? I just went on a 400 mile trip and nothing seemed wrong, should I take it to autozone and get a diagnostic check? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! what do I need to do to change the seal myself? are there and special tool required what is the piece called that I need to get from auto zone?

Answer:
It sounds like you are talking about the grease cap. Go to a car wash and wash it off. It may be that there is too much grease in it. It should be OK. The ABS is probably something else.

Question : Can you Help with Check Engine Light?
Hi, I have a 91 geo metro and the check engine light came on. I dont want to get ripped off at a shop so I took my baby to the professionals at auto zone for a diagnostic. The 8 dollar an hour professional came out and plugged the scan tool (code reader) in, and had a few codes pulled. First was cylinder 5 misfire, I am thinking this is an O2 sensor, that's what they told me. Also code 420 they said it was my cat or egr, bought them both and installed them. Then po171 and po174 bank 1 lean and bank two lean, they sold me a TPS and IAC valve, installed them. Now I go back for a warranty code read (no charge) and my ac stopped working. They said I was low on r134a and they could "recharge" it for me in the parking lot for 35 dollars parts and labor, so I said why not. A day later my freon be stopped working and I have warm air. I live in Arizona and it's 96 here during the days now. They then sold me a can of r12 and said to put it in myself. I just want my car fixed, can jiffy lube help

Answer:
Problem 1. Cylinder 5 misfire, change the turbo bearings. Problem 2. AC blowing hot air, have the radiator fan rewired for it is blowing the engine heat on to your condenser instead of away from it. They should have told you that when you add R134a to a R12 system that the fan must be reversed. I am sorry that they did not. If you are near Phoenix AZ take the car to the Jiffy Lube at the corner of Cheatem and Howl and ask for Dewey. He should fix you right up. Tell him Tom and Ray sent you, that way he will give you a real good deal.
