Actron CP9190 Elite

Works great. Has already paid for itself in helping to diagnose problems several times. Clear instructions and very easy to use. All of my vehicles are out of warranty now and I must attempt to repair myself. Being an old shade tree mechanic and not very up to date on the newer systems, this tool has helped me come up to speed. Most of the dealers and shops around here want at least 75 bucks just for a diagnostic check. At the very least this tool will allow you to see what codes are present and help give you a leg up on those high and mighty service writers at the shops.

Review of Actron 9190

I found the 9190 to be a great tool. It provides all the data I was looking for and displays in graph form data streems that I was needing to see. The Snap On scantools are much more exspensive and the Actron makes looking into ones own car service affordable. Thanks Actron

Pleased Purchaser

I bought this product after having taken my 2002 GMC truck to the shop four(4) times repeatedly for the check engine light coming on. I spent $342 trying to fix the problem. After checking my truck with the new scanner I found that all I needed was an $11 gas cap to stop check engine light from coming on. Never again will I be taken advantage of by the service department.

Excellent Product!

I brought this product twice as gifts for family memebers. This product is very handy and works great.

It worked for me.

I bought this to diagnose a misfiring cylinder. I had the same problem previously, and the dealer charged me $400 for diagnosis and repair. With this one use, I "broke even".

The code scanner worked well. The graphing feature is of limited use. I'm hoping future software updates will make it more useful. You can't press the buttons too quickly, or they won't work. I had to call the "help line" to install the driver so my computer could recognize the scanner via the USB cable.

Actron CP9185

This device is exactly as advertised.
I have used this on both cars 1999 Mitsubishi and Saturn. Some of the more advanced diagnostics my be passed the weekend DIY but a quick search on the internet and you will quickly be up to speed.

Usb cable is of a good quality, serial cable is heavy duty.
Software update is easy but takes a few minutes to do.
Internally memory is limited, you may need to download often if you use the record feature. My brother is a mechanic by trade and says that $219 my be a little expensive but the construction is durable and it will save you money on the trouble codes versus doing it at a garage.

The unit is pretty thin

Con: I would like this to be a little shorter and it would be nice with a hard case or at least a soft case with a compartment made to hold it securely. The included case is a fabric clam shell (good quality fabric and stitching)

I would recommend this only if you want advanced diagnostics.
This is not for people who just want to search and clear codes, for that I would recommend the 9135 or lesser expensive unit.

CP9185

Bought the CP9185 Autoscanner. Pluged it into my 2001 Tacoma and read the codes. Looked up what to do to repair the codes. Did it and then reread the codes and they were gone. Great tool to let you know what is going on with your vehicle. Gives you a chance to fix things your self, saving you big bucks. Haven't had the scanner real long and do not know how to use all the features yet, but would recommend it to anyone wanting to know what their codes are. It was very easy to use. You have to have a computer so you can print out the operations manual.

Actron CP9185 Elite Autoscanner Diagnostic Code Scanner With Live Read, Record and Playback Capability For OBDI and OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles

This tool reqires very little training, you can pretty much use it without instructions, however you might want to upgrade the software off of the internet.I tested my Toyota truck and everything is good,I was worried about the sensors not functioning correctly.I just got it ,a great tool to have, now I need to test some other vehicles in the family.I gave this reader 4 stars because I had some issues with the software not being compatable with my computer,Actron rep. if you read this how about an update on the computer software

User friendly Scanner

I previously used an Auto Xray for pre 96 vehicles. The newer AutoXray and Actron are very comparable scanners but after calling the companies and researching I decided to go with the Actron because 1)Actron came with a usb hook up for computer link(AX needs an adapter for serial cable) 2)Liked the graph features 3)Better instructions 4)More info in the scanner on codes. Since I already had a capable scanner for the old vehicles I went with the 9185 to save a few bucks off of the 9190. The scanner did prove to be simple to use but can be hazardous if your looking at the live data while driving. A good scanner for the money.

not worth the time and money

If you are looking for easy and effective OBD code reader and scanner don't go for this type of OBD-PC interface. The software that comes with it are a bunch of free wares and the software to run the program so you can use it to serve its purpose is very limited and most features of the sofware do not work - you may need to purchase the license software.. You can buy Actron code readers for the same price and no need a computer just plug it in your OBD. This unit is waste of time and money. a very Cheap product!

Great product, great company

If you know anything about the ELM327 chip, you know what you're looking at. If not, it's important to note that, as a previous review stated, this device comes with free and trial-ware software that has limited capability and you'll eventually need to get a software package that can take advantage of all of the features of this device.

I spent several weeks previewing every free and commercial version of scanning software I could get my hands on and can tell you that, hands-down, PCMScan is the best out there. Here's why...

The ELM327 chip captures all data being sent over the vehicle OBDII interface and passes it on to your computer. The software on your computer is where the magic happens. The logging and configuration capability of PCMScan is unsurpassed by any other product available.

There are self-contained hand-held units that can read the data, but the limitation of these devices begins when you want to log, graph and later review the data. Of the self-contained devices available, most don't log historical data, let alone allow the ability to configure graphs and tables to display the data. Of the ones that do log historical data, the data is lost when you unplug or turn the power off. With the ELM327, you can log the data of every single sensor passed over the OBDII port (dozens of them). Since the data is stored as small text files, there's virtually no limit on the amount of data you can capture and store for later review.

As far as the ELM327 device, there are several companies manufacturing these devices in the same price range. What everything comes down to is quality of the enclosure and responsiveness of the company. Crescent Trading (who sells the Uif Tech version of the ELM327 device) was awesome to deal with. I received my device on a Thursday and discovered it was not working correctly. I contacted Crescent about the problem that day and had a replacement in my hands two days later on a Saturday.

I would recommend these guys to anyone looking to purchase an ELM327 device.

Question : P1404 Engine Code...?
Ok, I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe LT and just got a tune-up done on it.....Now I have been driving it for about 3 weeks now after the tune-up and all of a sudden the service engine soon light comes on!!! Now I start to freak out because I am thinking "I just got it serviced".... Then I say to myself, maybe it is a mistake... The next morning, it is off and I am relaxed....then later in the day it comes on again!!!!! Then today it came on while I was driving, so I stopped at a local Autozone and rented an OBD II code reader, and it diagnosed a P1404, which to my understanding, has to do with the emission system? Now, I have been reading forums and have read that it might just require a thorough cleaning of the EGR and sort...or it might need replacement, which isn't relatively expensive.... What exactly should I ask for to be done on my truck when I take it in to a local repair shop? I am mostly asking what to say and ask of the mechanic at a local repair shop.....? Average cost???

Answer:
egr solenoid control faulty = P1404. Auto Zone reads codes FREE how come you had to pay ?? If you go to shop they will read code and you won't have to tell them a thing.

Question : Trouble with trouble code light?
I need to diagnose a problem with my 89 Toyota. The Trouble code light (check engine) light burned out and I don't have the time to tear apart the dash to get to it. Is there another way to retrieve the codes. The car is to old to uses a hand held code reader. I am supposed to use a jumper wire to retrive the codes. Please help. serious answers only Thanks

Answer:
if you tell me what model and engine, i can look up the color and position of the eng. light wire from the computer. you can then use a test light to flash the codes

Question : need OBS 1 code reader for 1995 900 2.3 non turbo engine...?
NEED CODE FOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT????

Answer:
NEED CODE FOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT????

Question : What does engine code "P0307" mean for an '01 Navigator?
While coming from ther movies last night, i got a CHECKENGINE LIGHT. Ran to AutoZone and used their code reader and got P0307 - Low compression on #7 cylinder. Help!

Answer:
P0307 is cylinder #7 misfire, not low compression. Low compression is a possibility but very doubtful. You have COP engine (coil on plug). Since i work at a Ford Dealer and have seen this b4, i will tell you its probably a coil and or spark plug. Its a common concern on these engines. Any questions feel free to ask.

Question : is there a way to check the engine light codes on a 92 explorer without a code reader?
I have a 92 explorer xlt 4x4 and the check engine light is on. Is there a trick to make the light flash the codes? Also it hesitates on acceleration. I've changed the plugs and wires and put lucas fuel injecter cleaner in it. I heard it might be the fuel pump causing it to surge like that but I think it might be related to whatevers making my check engine light come on. Its off everytime I crank it but then it comes on when I drive it up the road a couple miles. I know on some cars theres a trick using a paperclip to get the codes to flash and on my old 93 sundance I had to turn the ignition on and off a certain way to get the light to flash but I'm not sure if I can do that on my explorer. Thanks for the help. advance only does 96 and newer but yeah i found what all the codes mean I just need to find what codes my truck is putting out. How do I do the volt meter thing?

Answer:
take it to advane auto they will do it for free. you can also do it with a multi meter counting the number of times the needle jumps lets say two long and two short would be code 22, but then you would need to know what code 22 is you hook the meter up were the code machine would go and i beleive place the meter on A/C volts and simply turn the ignition ke on (not starting and it should read the codes. the chiltons manual explains how to do it. I had an 90 ranger that i had to do it too. i looked for the manual through out the house, but could not find one. tyou could try calling some garages and see if they have an old chiltons laying around to get a look at the exact procedurer or check at a local liberie.

Question : How to get diagnostic trouble code w/o a reader/device?
I have a 2001 Corolla with the check engine lite on. I understand how to reset it by temporarily removing the fuse. But, aside from taking it to the shop, how can I find out which trouble code(s) are causing the lite to go on. I seem to remember there is a trick involving using a paperclip to make a connection of some kind which triggers the engine lite to flash--by counting the flashes you can find out the code #s. Anyone know exactly how to do this? Thx. OK, I see from two answers that both say the paperclip method won't work on my car. And do I understand 'Married Couple' to be saying that Autozone will use the scanner and provide me with the reading for free? That would be great if they (or anybody else) did that. Married_Couple: I called AutoZone and confimed they do lend out the scanner free with deposit. Thanks very much for your help!

Answer:
the paper clip trick is for the old GM OBD-1 system. AutoZone will tell you what the code is for free.

Question : I have a 97 Merc Sable. I read the engine w/ code reader and it showed catalytic converter is below threshold.
Which is most likely to be my problem in the exhaust? The catalytic converter sensors or the catalytic converter itself?

Answer:
it is ether an oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter what does the freeze frame show for o2 reading?

Question : Possible cause of Check engine light on a 2000 Daewoo lanos?
I will probably need to put a code reader on it, but I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what the cause of their check engine light was. 2000 Daewoo Lanos, 4cyl. Thanks.

Answer:
It needs to be hooked to a diagnostic machine. It could be anything from a vacuum leak to an electrical problem. No way to tell without the code from the engine computer.

Question : 02 Expedition Check Engine Light Comes on with no code
The check engine light comes on and after putting a code reader on it, it has no fault code. The readings for the Throttle position sensor and MAFS was high and I have just replace those and after about 30 miles of driving, the check engine light came back on. It does not flash, just comes on and stays on steady, even when engine is first started. What else is there to check, and where would I find "normal" readings for the engine at an idle?

Question : On my 1999 F150 what would cause the theft light to flash and engine to turn over and not start?
It has a PATS system. I can take key out and put it back in for a few minutes or sometimes longer and theft light stops flashing and it will crank then. I know it has a chip in the key. My best quess is it is the key or the code reader. It actually died on me going down the road yesterday. Thought it was the fuel pump gone out but the PATS works by shutting off the fuel pump so I got it to crank again and drove it home. I am hoping the system may just be dirty inside the column since it is so erratic the way it works. Is there any way to clean the ignition system or key code reader?

Answer:
I'm sorry to inform you, but ANY time you have a PATS issue, the Ford dealer is the ONLY option to fix your problem. The reason for this is because only NGS, WDS, PDS or IDS will communicate with the PATS module. You will need to bring BOTH original keys with you. No other generic scan tool will communicate with the module, to enable diagnosis and/or repair.
