Questions & Answers
Question : Meaning for this "service engine soon" code for 1997 Blazer?
My fiance and I took his Blazer (1997, auto trans, V6) to Autozone and used their code reader because his service engine soon light has been on for a couple days. The code reader said "P1870" and below that it said "Manufacturer Control Transmission." Does anyone know what this means, or where we can look it up?

Answer:
Depending on which transmission you have, you could have a faulty TFP (Transmission Fluid Pressure) valve position sensor that is bad but before you do that you need to check the condition of the fluid, ie: burnt or smells bad.

Question : I have a VW Passat 2003 USA model the engine light keeps coming on can anyone tell me of common problems.?
Can anyone tell me of common problems with an American VW Passat 2003 model which causes the engine check light to keep coming on and can anyone tell me where to find the plug for the code reader to plug into.

Answer:
the plug thing is right in the middle..just under the radio and near the gear stick there should be a little black latch that lift off and thats where the computer plugs into

Question : How do I pull the engine codes from my Volvo 850 R?
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 R sedan, and I am trying to figure out how to pull the engine codes for diagnostics of the vehicle. I know that it is OBDII compliant, so all I have to do is take it to a dealer or an autoparts store, but I would like to know myself where the plug is located for the OBDII reader. How do you pull the codes? Does all it take to pull the codes is a OBDII reader?

Answer:
Lift up the arm rest on the center console. Then remove the plastic plug that sits in front of the gear shift knob. The connector is under that plug. Rick I'm a retired ASE Master/L-1 Technician. Question : check engine light went on but off now - will code reader pick up the error now?
my check engine light went on Friday last week, then it went off Tuesday afternoon - tomorrow is Saturday when I take it to the dealer/mechanic, will they be able to figure out the error code, or will the error code be gone because the light is off? trying to determine if I need to bring it in tomorrow, or if it is a waste of time if it is a gas cap issue what is the error code if it is an oxygen sensor issue what is the code also what damage can happen if i dont get it fixed (worse case scenario) I had a check engine light on last year and a half ago and they told me it was the gas cap - then it went off again within a month and they said it was some seal that was not working right that was leaking gas fumes. They were mistaken about the reason the first time - so why didn't the error code say exactly what the issue was in that instance - is the code too general, all encompassing so that they cannot tell the difference between a gas cap issue and a vapor leak?

Answer:
If it tripped a code the computer will save that code and the dealership should be able to retrieve it to see what it was. Could be something as simple as the gas cap was not tightened properly. If the light is now off, the issue is resolved for the time being.

Question : have a 2000 sentra my service engine light came on put code reader says catalistic below threshhold bank 3?
punched out catalystic converter same problem, what could it be?

Answer:
It means you have a bad catalytic converter, or a bad oxygen sensor reading the post cat exhaust. You say you punched out the cat? That will cause that code because the rear oxygen sensor is seeing that the exhaust is to contaminated therefore showing the catalytic converter not doing it's job. If you are under 8yrs/80,000 miles the Converter is covered under warranty. Unless you have cut it open to remove the pieces and they see that.

Question : 97 Ford Taurus.Check engine light has came on.Had car checked on a reader and code P0340 came up.?
Prior to this happening, the check engine light came on and I had the camshaft sensor replaced.Everything ran fine for many months. Now the light is back on with a code of P0340.Which means that the electrical circuit for the camshaft position sensor has a malfunction.Should I have a mechanic replace the camshaft and the camshaft sensor to avoid any more problems or should I just buy another sensor? Also, does anyone have a "ball park" figure on how much the camshaft and the sensor all together is going to run me?

Answer:
If you have previously replaced the sensor & your light is back on, then you either have a bad part or a wiring problem. P0340 is an EVAP code & is being set in your vehicle to satisfy Federal Emissions laws. It most likely will not affect the performance of your vehicle. I would suggest that you take it back to the dealership that did the previous repair. If it is a bad part, then the part should be under warranty & you may be able to get the repair taken care of for free.

Question : How can I find a fault code for a 1999 Cherokee?
I have a 1999 Cherokee Sport. I have check engine light and I got the code from a friends code reader, but do not know how to find out what the code means. Can anyone give me a hand? THE CODE IS 1493

Answer:
whats the code

Question : 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, do I need a code reader to read why my service engine light is on?
Can I simply turn on & off Ignition switch 3 times?

Answer:
If it is the service engine light it means the car needs servicing. Get "er done! If it is the check engine light, that has to do with emissions. Check the gas cap to see if its on properly. If the light does not turn off after a couple of days get it scanned it may be a sensor.

Question : bought new car and check engine light on .hooked car to diagnostic code reader and dont understand.?
hooked car to diagnostic code reader and got code (P0321) and (P0172) the P0172 says -SYSTEM TOO RICH(BANK1)- what does this mean the guy at auto zone says this means i need an O2 sensor but on the list of codes i see a code for an oxygen sensor so what does this mean

Answer:
Make model and year would be helpful. If I had a nickel for every Autozone nitwit that said to change an O2 sensor based solely on a lean or rich code I could retire. The O2 sensor measures the oxygen content of your exhaust stream. It does this by generating a voltage (typically between 0.0 and 1.0 volts) in relation to the amount of oxygen in your exhaust stream. The software in your powertrain control module (PCM) will interpret low voltage readings (typically less than .45 volts) as a lean condition (high oxygen content) and high voltage readings (typically above .45 volts) as a rich condition. The sensor does not measure anything other than oxygen, it does not measure hydrocarbons (unburned fuel), CO, CO2, NOx, or anything else in your vehicle's exhaust stream. As such, it is not a direct measurement of the air to fuel ratio that is actually entering your engine, because the PCM has no way to know exactly how much fuel is entering the engine. It has a general idea based on calibration, but does not know the exact amount. The PCM does know how much air is entering your engine (by way of the mass airflow sensor or MAF) and as such knows that roughly 20% of that is oxygen. In order to run at peak efficiency, achieve complete combustion, and keep emissions to a minimum the ideal (or stoichiometric) air to fuel ratio is 14.7 to 1. For a given MAF reading (along with other factors such as intake air temperature, coolant temperature, engine load etc.) the PCM will command a calibrated amount of fuel to be injected to the engine. By observing the O2 sensor the PCM can deduce whether the mixture was richer than needed (high O2 sensor voltage reading indicating low oxygen content in the exhaust stream) or leaner than needed (low 02 sensor voltage reading indicating high oxygen content in the exhaust stream). From this, the PCM will adjust the fuel injector on time to try to attain the ideal stoichiometric air to fuel ratio. If the adjustments necessary to achieve stoichiometry fall outside of a calibrated limit, then rich or lean diagnostic trouble codes are usually set. In short THE SENSOR IS MOST LIKELY DOING ITS JOB CORRECTLY. Again, post back with make, model, and year to get more assistance, especially for the P0321 code.

Question : P1404 Engine Code...?
Ok, I have a 2001 Chevy Tahoe LT and just got a tune-up done on it.....Now I have been driving it for about 3 weeks now after the tune-up and all of a sudden the service engine soon light comes on!!! Now I start to freak out because I am thinking "I just got it serviced".... Then I say to myself, maybe it is a mistake... The next morning, it is off and I am relaxed....then later in the day it comes on again!!!!! Then today it came on while I was driving, so I stopped at a local Autozone and rented an OBD II code reader, and it diagnosed a P1404, which to my understanding, has to do with the emission system? Now, I have been reading forums and have read that it might just require a thorough cleaning of the EGR and sort...or it might need replacement, which isn't relatively expensive.... What exactly should I ask for to be done on my truck when I take it in to a local repair shop? I am mostly asking what to say and ask of the mechanic at a local repair shop.....? Average cost???

Answer:
egr solenoid control faulty = P1404. Auto Zone reads codes FREE how come you had to pay ?? If you go to shop they will read code and you won't have to tell them a thing.
