Question : How to get diagnostic trouble code w/o a reader/device?
I have a 2001 Corolla with the check engine lite on. I understand how to reset it by temporarily removing the fuse. But, aside from taking it to the shop, how can I find out which trouble code(s) are causing the lite to go on. I seem to remember there is a trick involving using a paperclip to make a connection of some kind which triggers the engine lite to flash--by counting the flashes you can find out the code #s. Anyone know exactly how to do this? Thx.
OK, I see from two answers that both say the paperclip method won't work on my car. And do I understand 'Married Couple' to be saying that Autozone will use the scanner and provide me with the reading for free? That would be great if they (or anybody else) did that.
Married_Couple: I called AutoZone and confimed they do lend out the scanner free with deposit. Thanks very much for your help!
Answer:
the paper clip trick is for the old GM OBD-1 system. AutoZone will tell you what the code is for free.

Question : 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5s makes noise when accelerating coming from under the engine i think?
If on park and i press on the gas the noise does not appear, however, when driving the noise can be heard coming from the engine, only when accelerating as if some rattling/air noise is coming from under the engine. I have no clue what is causing the sound, i hook up a code reader to see if any code would appear and nothing. You can definately hear the noise more when going up hill. Once again the noise is a blowing/rattling/clicking noise when accelerating
Answer:
Check your exhaust under the car, some times little stones can get stuck in the exhaust shields and can cause rattles which sound horrible.

Question : nissan frontier 2002 error code p0505 wont start.?
Truck wouldnt start.Check engine light on.Code reader Flashes yellow light saying other codes cant be read until truck runs but I cant start truck with check engine light on.
Answer:
p0505 is the IACV/AAC Valve (Idle control valve) You'll probably just have to get it replaced. The part costs about 179 dollars plus maintenance.
For the parts price I estimated your frontier was a 2wd v6, although it shouldn't make too much of a difference if it is awd. You can find the part at the second link.

Question : My 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan is sputtering. New fuel injector needed?
I have a 1998 Grand Caravan, 3.8 liter, 80,000 miles. A month ago my car started hesitating and sputtering. The sputtering got so bad that the car wouldn’t even accelerate when I gave it gas, acting like it was flooded with fuel. It even backfired a little and produced a heavy fuel smell inside and outside the car. The “Service Engine Soon” light came on and I took it to the mechanic so they could read the trouble code. The “engine code reader” said that there was a problem with the fuel injector in the fifth cylinder and that the fuel injector was misfiring. The mechanics first replaced the spark plugs and spark plug cables. A few days later tho, the “Service Engine” light came on again with the same trouble code. They replaced the fuel injector in the 5th cylinder and again we got the same trouble code: bad fuel injector in the 5th cylinder. They then replaced the ignition coil, but this did not solve the problem either. The mechanics are baffled. Can you help?
Answer:
Mine did the same thing. It was the fuel filter which was located inside the fuel tank.

Question : I need to locate where to plug in the OBD code reader on my 1995 Mercedes E320 Cabriolet?
My check engine light came on in my 95 E320 Cabriolet. I went to Advance Auto parts because they will let you use their OBD 1 and II code reader. On my other cars in the past there has been a place usually under the dash where you can plug it in to get a reading. I have checked everywhere I can think of and cannot locate where to plug it in on my Benz! I have even checked the web all over and can't seem to get an answer. Also, since it is a 95, do I need the OBD1 or OBD II? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have also checked under the steering column and looked for this cover that is supposed to open up but my car does not have that. It has a large panel that covers the underside of the dash which is bolted on and under that is wires, etc. No snap off covers of any kind.
Answer:
Under the hood, passenger side, close to the windshield is a 16 pin socket under a small cover. You will know when you find it. After you pop the cover each socket pin is marked 1-16.
Remind Advance Auto Parts that even though your car is a 1995 it's still the older body type (like a 1994). The convertible carried over an extra year.
They would have to give you the proper adapter for the kind of connection your car uses. I would actually be surprised if a retail store like that has the type of tool your car needs.
