Questions & Answers
Question : Is there a way to read the codes on a MERCEDES 97 C280 WITHOUT A CODE READER?
MY CAR IS ONLY DRIVING IN FIRST GEAR AND THE ABS AND CHECK ENGINE IS FLASHING. THANK YOU

Answer:
No there is not.

Question : Do they may an engine code reader for a 1989 Volvo 240 DL?
The check engine light is stuck on my car, and I plan on keeping the car for a while and working on it myself. Before I bring it to a mechanic I wanted to know if they make a code reader I can buy, so I know if I can fix it myself or have to bring it in.

Answer:
The car has an On Board Diagnostic port which is under your hood by your coolant reservoir. The is port A and port B. You want port A Take the cover off, and pull the plug off the cover and plug it into one of the center slots (1 slot is for fuel injection and the other center slot is for ignition) and with the key on, press and hold the button on the port for 2 seconds and release. There will be a three digit code. If there is no code it will be 1-1-1, if there is a code it will be something like 2-2-4 or 1-1-5 and so on. Follow the same procedure for more codes. After getting your codes, you will need a way to decipher them, which is another question you can ask to get the answer. I can tell you what they mean once you get the codes

Question : I need to locate where to plug in the OBD code reader on my 1995 Mercedes E320 Cabriolet?
My check engine light came on in my 95 E320 Cabriolet. I went to Advance Auto parts because they will let you use their OBD 1 and II code reader. On my other cars in the past there has been a place usually under the dash where you can plug it in to get a reading. I have checked everywhere I can think of and cannot locate where to plug it in on my Benz! I have even checked the web all over and can't seem to get an answer. Also, since it is a 95, do I need the OBD1 or OBD II? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have also checked under the steering column and looked for this cover that is supposed to open up but my car does not have that. It has a large panel that covers the underside of the dash which is bolted on and under that is wires, etc. No snap off covers of any kind.

Answer:
Under the hood, passenger side, close to the windshield is a 16 pin socket under a small cover. You will know when you find it. After you pop the cover each socket pin is marked 1-16. Remind Advance Auto Parts that even though your car is a 1995 it's still the older body type (like a 1994). The convertible carried over an extra year. They would have to give you the proper adapter for the kind of connection your car uses. I would actually be surprised if a retail store like that has the type of tool your car needs.

Question : 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5s makes noise when accelerating coming from under the engine i think?
If on park and i press on the gas the noise does not appear, however, when driving the noise can be heard coming from the engine, only when accelerating as if some rattling/air noise is coming from under the engine. I have no clue what is causing the sound, i hook up a code reader to see if any code would appear and nothing. You can definately hear the noise more when going up hill. Once again the noise is a blowing/rattling/clicking noise when accelerating

Answer:
Check your exhaust under the car, some times little stones can get stuck in the exhaust shields and can cause rattles which sound horrible.

Question : 02 Expedition Check Engine Light Comes on with no code
The check engine light comes on and after putting a code reader on it, it has no fault code. The readings for the Throttle position sensor and MAFS was high and I have just replace those and after about 30 miles of driving, the check engine light came back on. It does not flash, just comes on and stays on steady, even when engine is first started. What else is there to check, and where would I find "normal" readings for the engine at an idle?

Question : Where do you plug in a code reader on a 1995 Ford F-150?
The check engine light came on a week ago, I tried adding a water remover, checked my connection to make ure they were solid and my fluid levels. I'm trying to use a code reader, but it doesn't ay exactly where to plug it in.

Answer:
SOME 1995 model year Ford products were already OBD-II compliant, even though it wasn't required until 1996. On your 1995 F-150 the 16-pin data link connector is located on the PASSENGER side, inside the vehicle, directly beneath the glove compartment. As strange as it sounds, that's where Ford chose to put it. Hope this helps.

Question : Checking OBD-1 Codes without a code reader/diagnostic reader?
I recently read an article detailing how to get diagnostic codes from just a jumper wire. I used a piece of wire, put one end on the ground at the diagnostic terminal, then the other end on the diagnostic pin...nothing happened. Is there another way of doing this and is it true that you can check OBD at home? I have also heard that once the ground is connected, touch the other end to all terminals and wait for the check engine light to come on. Is there any way to "short" out the ECU or otherwise cause damage doing this? Thanks

Answer:
Go to Auto Zone and they will check your car for free. If the Check Engine Light isn't on, then there probably isn't anything wrong with your vehicle.

Question : I have a 2000 Honda Civic ans for some reason the yellow engine light came on. What does that mean?
It is an old style engine light and it is not digital. It is just a little scrolling wheel that is either green yellow or red. I have no idea what yellow means and a code reader says nothing. The car does seem to rumble a little more at idle. Please help!

Answer:
If you've changed your engine oil recently it may be that you or the mechanic you assigned did not reset the sensor right under your dash for you. Try this: Look for the switch it's normally to the right side of the steering column under the dash (it's close to the edge) press and hold the button while you start the engine. Keep the button pressed until that light shuts off. If that doesn't work have your Honda's manual handy and check to see about your lights and their meanings.

Question : Possible cause of Check engine light on a 2000 Daewoo lanos?
I will probably need to put a code reader on it, but I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what the cause of their check engine light was. 2000 Daewoo Lanos, 4cyl. Thanks.

Answer:
It needs to be hooked to a diagnostic machine. It could be anything from a vacuum leak to an electrical problem. No way to tell without the code from the engine computer.

Question : is there a way to check the engine light codes on a 92 explorer without a code reader?
I have a 92 explorer xlt 4x4 and the check engine light is on. Is there a trick to make the light flash the codes? Also it hesitates on acceleration. I've changed the plugs and wires and put lucas fuel injecter cleaner in it. I heard it might be the fuel pump causing it to surge like that but I think it might be related to whatevers making my check engine light come on. Its off everytime I crank it but then it comes on when I drive it up the road a couple miles. I know on some cars theres a trick using a paperclip to get the codes to flash and on my old 93 sundance I had to turn the ignition on and off a certain way to get the light to flash but I'm not sure if I can do that on my explorer. Thanks for the help. advance only does 96 and newer but yeah i found what all the codes mean I just need to find what codes my truck is putting out. How do I do the volt meter thing?

Answer:
take it to advane auto they will do it for free. you can also do it with a multi meter counting the number of times the needle jumps lets say two long and two short would be code 22, but then you would need to know what code 22 is you hook the meter up were the code machine would go and i beleive place the meter on A/C volts and simply turn the ignition ke on (not starting and it should read the codes. the chiltons manual explains how to do it. I had an 90 ranger that i had to do it too. i looked for the manual through out the house, but could not find one. tyou could try calling some garages and see if they have an old chiltons laying around to get a look at the exact procedurer or check at a local liberie.
