Questions & Answers
Question : Does a OBD II car reader for Fords read only codes that cause the Check engine light to come on?
Or will it provide other information to help keep the car running good? Will it tell me why something like my A/C isn't working? Also I see some for $30 and some for $100, whats the difference?
Answer:
A "code reader" reads just the codes and may be able to reset them. A "code scanner" shows what many of the sensors are reporting to the computer and things like long and short term fuel trim and other generic live stream OBD-II data. Only a manufacturer specific scanner such as those used by your dealer shows most everything they can monitor in the factory. Actron, Auto Xray and Sunpro are all owned by the same company now. So go to http://www.actron.com to see what you can afford. You should be able to get a full generic OBD-II scanner for $275. Some scanners (some AutoXray models) allow you to connect them to your PC computer to view the data collected in graphic form and store a snap shot of your car's computer parameters to compare to when future problems occur.

Question : My Check Engine Ligh is on. Does anyone know what this code means?
I drive a 1998 Ford Explorer V6 4.0 Liter and my Check Engine Light has been on for about a week now. There have been no problems (yet) with how my vehicle is running. I had my neighbor who is a mechanic check the code for me and the code that appears on his reader is P1405. Does anyone know what this code means and/or what needs to be done to my truck?
Also, could this be a serious problem to where I should be driving my truck as little as possible until it is fixed?
Answer:
DTC P1405: INSPECT UPSTREAM PRESSURE HOSE CONNECTIONS
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1405 indicates that Continuous Memory Self-Test has detected the exhaust manifold side (upstream) differential pressure feedback D.P.F. EGR sensor pressure hose is off or plugged.
Possible causes:
Improper upstream pressure hose connection.
Upstream pressure hose plugged.
Plugged or damaged pressure pickup tubes.
Inspect upstream hose at D.P.F. EGR sensor and orifice tube assembly for disconnect or poor connection.
Is hose off or poorly connected?
Most likely your DPFE sensor has failed. This is a very common failure on ALL Ford products. If the the two DPFE hoses are good, go to your nearest Ford dealer parts department to purchase a DPFE sensor and replace it yourself. Disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds to erase the code. This job takes all of 10 minutes. Hope this helps.

Question : I have a 2000 Honda Civic ans for some reason the yellow engine light came on. What does that mean?
It is an old style engine light and it is not digital. It is just a little scrolling wheel that is either green yellow or red. I have no idea what yellow means and a code reader says nothing. The car does seem to rumble a little more at idle. Please help!
Answer:
If you've changed your engine oil recently it may be that you or the mechanic you assigned did not reset the sensor right under your dash for you. Try this: Look for the switch it's normally to the right side of the steering column under the dash (it's close to the edge) press and hold the button while you start the engine. Keep the button pressed until that light shuts off.
If that doesn't work have your Honda's manual handy and check to see about your lights and their meanings.

Question : 02 Expedition Check Engine Light Comes on with no code
The check engine light comes on and after putting a code reader on it, it has no fault code. The readings for the Throttle position sensor and MAFS was high and I have just replace those and after about 30 miles of driving, the check engine light came back on. It does not flash, just comes on and stays on steady, even when engine is first started. What else is there to check, and where would I find "normal" readings for the engine at an idle?

Question : On my 1999 F150 what would cause the theft light to flash and engine to turn over and not start?
It has a PATS system. I can take key out and put it back in for a few minutes or sometimes longer and theft light stops flashing and it will crank then. I know it has a chip in the key. My best quess is it is the key or the code reader. It actually died on me going down the road yesterday. Thought it was the fuel pump gone out but the PATS works by shutting off the fuel pump so I got it to crank again and drove it home. I am hoping the system may just be dirty inside the column since it is so erratic the way it works. Is there any way to clean the ignition system or key code reader?
Answer:
I'm sorry to inform you, but ANY time you have a PATS issue, the Ford dealer is the ONLY option to fix your problem. The reason for this is because only NGS, WDS, PDS or IDS will communicate with the PATS module. You will need to bring BOTH original keys with you. No other generic scan tool will communicate with the module, to enable diagnosis and/or repair.

Question : Have you used the PocketScan™ OBD II Code Reader from Actron to diagnose a problem on a 2001 Tahoe?
Want to see if Check engine light is really a problem or just a Revenue Generator for dealerships.
Answer:
Unless you are experiencing an semi-serious engine problem. the check engine light could come on for number of reasons. Could be anything from an o2 sensor to an EGR valve to an irregularity in voltage in the fuel gage or a faulty coil. There could be a hundred reasons why the light came on.
It's not a Revenue Generator. Cars are technologically advanced and the check engine light comes on whenever a code is triggered.
You can also unplug your battery and let it sit for 5 min and that will often reset the code. Then you can drive and see if the check engine light was a one time code or if there is a part that needs replacing.

Question : I have a 97 Merc Sable. I read the engine w/ code reader and it showed catalytic converter is below threshold.
Which is most likely to be my problem in the exhaust? The catalytic converter sensors or the catalytic converter itself?
Answer:
it is ether an oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter
what does the freeze frame show for o2 reading?

Question : Trouble with trouble code light?
I need to diagnose a problem with my 89 Toyota.
The Trouble code light (check engine) light burned out and I don't have the time to tear apart the dash to get to it.
Is there another way to retrieve the codes. The car is to old to uses a hand held code reader. I am supposed to use a jumper wire to retrive the codes. Please help. serious answers only
Thanks
Answer:
if you tell me what model and engine, i can look up the color and position of the eng. light wire from the computer. you can then use a test light to flash the codes

Question : is there a way to check the engine light codes on a 92 explorer without a code reader?
I have a 92 explorer xlt 4x4 and the check engine light is on. Is there a trick to make the light flash the codes? Also it hesitates on acceleration. I've changed the plugs and wires and put lucas fuel injecter cleaner in it. I heard it might be the fuel pump causing it to surge like that but I think it might be related to whatevers making my check engine light come on. Its off everytime I crank it but then it comes on when I drive it up the road a couple miles. I know on some cars theres a trick using a paperclip to get the codes to flash and on my old 93 sundance I had to turn the ignition on and off a certain way to get the light to flash but I'm not sure if I can do that on my explorer. Thanks for the help.
advance only does 96 and newer but yeah i found what all the codes mean I just need to find what codes my truck is putting out. How do I do the volt meter thing?
Answer:
take it to advane auto they will do it for free. you can also do it with a multi meter counting the number of times the needle jumps lets say two long and two short would be code 22, but then you would need to know what code 22 is
you hook the meter up were the code machine would go and i beleive place the meter on A/C volts and simply turn the ignition ke on (not starting and it should read the codes. the chiltons manual explains how to do it. I had an 90 ranger that i had to do it too. i looked for the manual through out the house, but could not find one. tyou could try calling some garages and see if they have an old chiltons laying around to get a look at the exact procedurer or check at a local liberie.

Question : 96 Crown Vic sat for long time warms up and dies runs rough idle and crank sensor replaced, will stay running?
So my question is, code reader says one bank rich one lean so we are thinking heated o2 sensor bad, how do I tell which one? Runs great going 80, runs rough most of the other time. 4.6l pi engine w engine code. Changing fuel filter and plugs tonight. One other thing will stay running when you first start it after sitting for awhile (hours) but when it warms up dies. Any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
"What is 'Heated o2 Sensor'?" Have "Back Pressures" Checked at Muffler and Catalytic Converter! That could cause an o2 and Fuel Imbalance Problems.
NOTE; Unless it's really cold out (27 Degrees or Less) "Warm-Up" of more then 1 minute is not really needed!
