Get rid of the light
Great device. Easy to use with many options for DIY'ers. Allows you to find out the code attributed to the Check Engine Light, find the code meaning and then clear the light. It comes with a CD of codes and their meanings.

Paid itself from the first use
The first time used this product was because of a transmission product in one 2002 car. The Actron CP9175 detected a code and named the part of the car the transmission that was malfunctioning. With a little research on internet i founded out the location of the part in the car. It took me no loger than one hour to find and replace the broken part, and, best of all, I did it myself!

AutoScanner
Everything works as advertised. This device reads the codes and clears them. It was extremely helpful in finding what was wrong with my car and i was able to do the repairs myself thanks to this device.

Excellent product.
This scanner quickly and easily read the problem codes on my 98 Subaru. It also was able to reset them. The unit works well and is worth the money even if you have mechanic do the work. At least you know you're not getting ripped off.

Has anyone actually used this item to fix a REAL problem?
Am having DTC's of P0171 and P0174. And there's a generic list of all the possible problems. But that's NO help at all! I am looking for a scanner that pins down the problem, and simply cuts out the guess work. I would like to hear from those that ACTUALLY had a problem and that this 3130 scanner found it!!! Thanks

excellent product
This scanner is excellent. It works on every car I have plugged it into. It is very easy to use and response time is faster than the big expensive ones. Sometimes though it will show pending codes as stored codes when the check engine light is not on. Every thing else is great just wish it read abs codes a great buy for the money. The exact same scanner in the store is double.

Easy to use, better than most, but could still have more
I needed a scanner to diagnose a 2000 Cadillac Catera. Repair shop said they weren't getting "proper" trouble codes. I used this to one, find the problem, and diagnose subsequent issues. But I did need some assistance on the Internet as both the tool and the way the car's computer work prevented me from getting complete details. Overall I don't think I could have found a better product. This tool was capable of an additional level of communication that $20-$50 scanners couldn't do, but it didn't have the full reach of $1,000 commercial products. (Don't know why my repair shop had worse results.) If you need such a tool I highly recommend it, but be aware it won't diagnose the problem for you, more like assist you. i also understand some parts stores will hook your car up to their tool for free, so try that first.

Doesn't work with a Mac
I have a Mac, not a PC. This product is not compatible with Macs. It should be fine if you have a PC but for me I'd have to spend another $500 or so to get a PC.

Works as advertised
I am glad I decided to get this code reader. Even though the problem I have been having on my '99 Maxima did not display a "check engine" light, the reader picked up a code which related to changing my knock sensor. I also like the fact that it has live reading capabilities. Worth the investment for me.

actron cp 9449 brake scan
Brake scan would not work on my 1999 grand prix because it is not suported. Some vehicles it will not scan because they are not on the software, called tech support and no updates available yet, pontiac only has 2 vehicles supported in 1999 year, others have more but note all GM vehicles are. Be careful on what you want it to do!

Good, But Limited
Before buying, check carefully if the car you have is supported by the tool. There are many of the pre 2000 that are not. For supported vehicles, it works well.

OBDI?
Anyone knows a good scanner for OBDI vehicles in order to diagnose a broad spectrum of issues including the ABS-related problems?
Rating :
It gets the job done
Just recently purchased this unit and it does exactly what they say it does. One thing I don't like about it is that you can't clear the history. This is a big negative! Other than that, it's fine.

NOT All Vehicles supported....
I bought this device hoping to get an exact trouble code (DTC) from my ABS system. However, when I got it I find out that it will not work with my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Only the 2004 and 2005 Grand Prix is covered. You'd think Actron would get on the ball with update software or something. Think of all the 1997-2003 Grand Prix's (not to mention tons of other makes)out there driving around with their ABS lights on... If you're thinking of buying this product, do yourself a favor and goto their website (actron.com) first to see if your vehicle is on their list that this product works with.
Other than this huge let down for me the tool looks pretty neat and would be helpful if it actually covers your vehicle.

Great scanner for do-it-yourselfer
First scanner I received was faulty - the display had a lot of dead pixels. Amazon replaced it very quickly - as usual! Second unit is great. Reads codes and pending codes, can turn off the dreaded Check Engine Light. Extensive online resource from the manufacturer can assist in narrowing down the possible causes of the codes and Check Engine Light. Very easy to use, once you learn all the special lingo. Probably not rugged enough for professional/daily use, but great for the average home user. I would say the "weakest link" would be the cable, where it joins the unit. The stress-reliever could be more robust. For the money I think it's the best, and I checked out dozens.

Pays for itself
This handy little device pays for itself after the first use. It is easy to use and sure beats paying a garage $100 to tell you why your Check Engine light is on.

Great OBDI Code reader WITHOUT Blinking Lights
Finally this is a OBDI code reader for cheap that doesn't have the blinking lights. Comeon if I wanted blinking lights I would use the paper clip and engine light method. But, this gives you a simliar to an OBD-II display but for OBD-I Fords. This does exactly the same things as other code readers but I find it way better to read and like the code book. Don't waste your time with cheapo blinking light $30 code readers at your local auto parts store, get this one for around $30 and bask in digital display.

100% Satisfied customer!!!
I had multiple mysterious conditions accompanying my "Check Engine" light. The dealer wanted $100 just to read my codes! I thought I could find a reader at least for the same price and found most readers that would read OBD1 codes were over $150.00 until I found this Ford specific OBD1 reader at a fraction of the cost the dealer was going to charge me. My 1st thought was that this could'nt be a quality device for $25.00. I read up on the product, trusted the reviewers here on Amazon and gave it a go. I found 5 codes and was able to do several other self diagnosing tests and am 100% satisfied with this product. Highly recommended! It is rare to get more than you pay for... but this is indeed one of those times. Thanks Amazon for listing great product. Dennis - Oceanside, CA

WORKS GREAT!!!!!!
This product worked great! The digital readout was definitely better than trying to count the "flashes of the dash". I would also recommend purchasing the extension cable. That truly makes it a one man job.

Difficult to hook up, but worked fine
I got this reader for my 1994 Explorer. It was a bit difficult getting it hooked up to my truck. Finding the OBD1 code port in the first place was not easy. Once I did find it, figuring out how this unit plugged into the port correctly took a bit of experimentation.
However, once it was plugged in, it read the codes out of my truck just fine.
The unit is not exactly intuitive, but once you figure it all out, it does work fine. I wouldn't recommend it for the novice.

Questions & Answers
Question : Auto diagnostic training?
Hi everyone I'm looking for a training program that would teach me the skills i need to do engine diagnostics. I dont have much knowlege about it but my dad tells me its a good field to get into. I cant find anything usefull on the web but What i want to bassicaly do is purchase the diagnostic tools and software to connect them to my laptop and learn how to use it to determine what what is wrong with a car, I will not be repairing it just diagnosing it. Also I'm only interested in equipment for japanese and european cars. So if anyone can help me with ideas on how to get started with this, or references to courses, or even what tools I should get, please inform me that would help me out tremendously.
Again thank you
Answer:
I work for Ford [which includes Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, Land rover etc] and getting a job as a diagnostics engineer is superb but very complex. This end of the diagnostics chain is best because you get to design the diagnostics capability of the system BUT as a diagnostics engineer for a garage, you just read codes [VERY EASY!] and say whats wrong, not much to it.
Tools such as WDS/IDS [maybe Ford specific] are worth investigating, which read off diagnostics code and if you know the ECU Supplier, they can provide what the codes mean.
I trust this helps? I would really appreciate it if you could please rate me as BEST ANSWER :-)

Question : 01 chevy mailbu w/auto trans at times the car will loose power and the rpm goes very low. Any suggestions?
I can do highway or city driving and it makes no difference.I have had the car tuned up, however the engine lite is on. A friend of mine put a diagnostic tool on the car and said that the code (whcih i don't recall) said it usually indicates a poor seal of the gas cap.Any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
Losing power while driving is a classic symptom of a plugged catalytic converter...while driving, it just starts slowing down, even if you push more on the gas.
It will buck a little while it does this, because exhaust is back pressuring, preventing the free flow of gases.
It might not be that, but it sure sounds like it...

Question : Who's your daddy? Answer's at the drugstore (What Do you Think?? About That. )?
Who's your daddy? Answer's at the drugstore (What Do you Think?? About That. )?
Answer:
i was just telling my sister about the home D.N.A. she didn't believe they were being sold in stores. i think they are a great idea. now all those lil girls /women can stop making a fool of them selves on Maury because it looks so ignorant and disrespectful. and it's cheaper than going to a lab or the court system.

Question : Can you go to autozone for them to diagnose a "service engline soon" light for free?
If not autozone, do any other auto places do that for free? and is it a companywide policy or decided by individual stores? When I say diagnose I mean simply hooking up the diagnostic thingy and showing what is wrong with it. And from your experience are diagnosis tools acurate in general?
Answer:
They will read the code(s) for free, and that is a company policy!
They want to sell you the parts to fix your car, and if you go to a shop, the shop will get the parts from their own sources! The code will tell you what type of failure you have, but sometimes does not tell you the exact cause.
Once you know what the code is, you can decide if it is something that you need to have a shop repair. The code readers are accurate and so valuable that I paid several thousand dollars for one and pay every few years to update it!!

Question : Shutting off warning lights on new Audi/VW autos.?
chalupas_and_beer ask this question a couple days ago and the answers were weak. What you need is a vagcom from Ross Tech. With this diagnostic tool which you connect to the obd-II and a laptop. You can read/reset all fault codes. And you can modify certain parameters. Such as turning off DRL, Remote window lowering, or log engine stats. It costs $150 and is worth every penny. You could also borrow one, TDIclub.com has a list of registered vagcom users who are willing to help. I know this is not a question but the previous answers did not answer the question. The correct answer is Vagcom.
Answer:
Yeah I feel like a Ross-tech salesman everytime I have to answer a stinkin CEL question because I have to do it every other time, and nobody listens. Its not a legit question posting but kudos anyway.

Question : IAT mod chip for 01 Infiniti error code p1165?
Can some one please help me with a little problem I have? I bought one of those cheap IAT MOD "chips" (resistor) off of EBAY and now my check engine light is on. I know that there is no real problem. Once the check engine light came on, I removed the resisitor and plugged the IAT sensor back in after disconnecting the battery first. Is there any easy to reset the code with out a diagnostic tool or going to the dealership? I went to a auto parts store and they said that they are not allowed to reset errors. I need to have my car inspected by the end of the month and was just wondering if I left my battery unplugged for a few hour if, the error would reset. Any tips would be helpful. Thanks!
Answer:
nah you will need a scanner, why dont you just pay a shop to turn it off?

Question : Why won't my 1994 GMC Jimmy 4.3L v6 vortec start.?
There are times that it would only take 2 times of cranking it and it will start and then there are times that I would have to crank it 20 or so times and it would finally start. If it wouldn't start after that I would have to get a jump, and it would start right up. Once I got it started in the mornings it would start just fine all day. I changed the battery and the people at the auto part store said that the alternator was charging. It still wouldn't start right. Now it won't start without a jump and it has to have a jump through out the day. The other day the check engine light came on so I had the people at the auto part store check it with diagnostic tool and they said that it came back that it was the MAP sensor(It is using more gas and does run rough). So I changed it and it is still doing the same thing. I don't know if the two problems have any thing to do with each other. I just wish it would start. If anyone knows what it could be please let me know.
Answer:
sounds like ignition. start with spark plugs and wires. then distributor cap and rotor. then check the timing.
