Good way to set performance baseline for your cazr

This product allows you to capture data from the ODBC II port on most newer vehicles. I found it easy to use and I'm the kind of person who will log data from all my cars and keep it for future reference. When the car isn't running right, I'll use the old data for diagnosis. My only complaint is that the CarChip only logs 4 signals in addition to vehicle speed and only a small set of the available signals. I'd rather it log more signals at once. For that, I'd be happy to trade off how long it can log data for more signals. For example, with a Chevy V8 engine, you cannot log the fuel trim for both cylinder banks and all 4 O2 sensor signals at the same time.

Questions & Answers
Question : I drive an 01 civic,my code reader says misfires on the cylinders & catalyst below threshold. is it 02 sensor?
ive been told to replace both 02 sensors, but i can't figure out which of the 2 sensors it is. i changed my old spark plugs and smelled gas when i started the engine for a while. the car will stall if i leave it to idle for a few minutes, the RPM's slowly drop. it doesnt smell like gas anymore. the codes ive been getting at P0303, P0302, P0300, P0420. I need help with this one! i cant afford to spend $250/sensor on 2 sensors and hope it works :)

Answer:
Misfires will cause unburned fuel to be pushed into the exhaust, and then your O2 sensors and cat will throw a code. Was everything okay before you changed the plugs? Are they properly gapped? Are the plug wires completely plugged in?

Question : I own a dodge dakota. The check engine light is on intermittenly. Are code readers worth buying.?
Can the code readers really tell you what the exact problems are? What should I look for if I decide to buy a code reader. Thanks for any help with this problem.

Answer:
most auto parts stores will actually "read" your computer for no charge provided you buy the part from them. If you are a hand on person and typically do your own work then yes it is very worthwhile. If you go to the garage then just let them do it. They will want to use their equipment anyway. You also have a leg to stand on if they diagnose it replace a part and its not the issue. If you go and say It's the Oxygen sensor etc, they can just say its what you wanted when you brought it in. Natually a sunpro etc won't be as good as a snap on scanner but they do their jobs. I have never had a problem.

Question : Is there a way to read the codes on a MERCEDES 97 C280 WITHOUT A CODE READER?
MY CAR IS ONLY DRIVING IN FIRST GEAR AND THE ABS AND CHECK ENGINE IS FLASHING. THANK YOU

Answer:
No there is not.

Question : What would I need to pull the engine fault codes out of a 93 Mazda 626?
I have a Actron code reader/eraser I have pretty much all the cables for obdII and chrysler/ford/GM obdI. I was wondering if maybe there was a special cable I could get for reading pre 96 foreign cars. I have read in a few places something about a ten pin or blink codes or something. Does anyone have any additional info please?

Answer:
You don't need cables or scanner. Mazda doesn't offer live data, so the scanner is just an very expensive code reader. Go here------> http://autorepair.about.com/library/ts/obd-i/bl-dtcs-44a.htm …and scroll down below the list of code descriptions for the procedure and an illustration of what you need to do to retrieve the codes. All it takes is a paperclip and the "Check Engine" light. Happy Motoring

Question : I need to locate where to plug in the OBD code reader on my 1995 Mercedes E320 Cabriolet?
My check engine light came on in my 95 E320 Cabriolet. I went to Advance Auto parts because they will let you use their OBD 1 and II code reader. On my other cars in the past there has been a place usually under the dash where you can plug it in to get a reading. I have checked everywhere I can think of and cannot locate where to plug it in on my Benz! I have even checked the web all over and can't seem to get an answer. Also, since it is a 95, do I need the OBD1 or OBD II? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have also checked under the steering column and looked for this cover that is supposed to open up but my car does not have that. It has a large panel that covers the underside of the dash which is bolted on and under that is wires, etc. No snap off covers of any kind.

Answer:
Under the hood, passenger side, close to the windshield is a 16 pin socket under a small cover. You will know when you find it. After you pop the cover each socket pin is marked 1-16. Remind Advance Auto Parts that even though your car is a 1995 it's still the older body type (like a 1994). The convertible carried over an extra year. They would have to give you the proper adapter for the kind of connection your car uses. I would actually be surprised if a retail store like that has the type of tool your car needs.

Question : bought new car and check engine light on .hooked car to diagnostic code reader and dont understand.?
hooked car to diagnostic code reader and got code (P0321) and (P0172) the P0172 says -SYSTEM TOO RICH(BANK1)- what does this mean the guy at auto zone says this means i need an O2 sensor but on the list of codes i see a code for an oxygen sensor so what does this mean

Answer:
Make model and year would be helpful. If I had a nickel for every Autozone nitwit that said to change an O2 sensor based solely on a lean or rich code I could retire. The O2 sensor measures the oxygen content of your exhaust stream. It does this by generating a voltage (typically between 0.0 and 1.0 volts) in relation to the amount of oxygen in your exhaust stream. The software in your powertrain control module (PCM) will interpret low voltage readings (typically less than .45 volts) as a lean condition (high oxygen content) and high voltage readings (typically above .45 volts) as a rich condition. The sensor does not measure anything other than oxygen, it does not measure hydrocarbons (unburned fuel), CO, CO2, NOx, or anything else in your vehicle's exhaust stream. As such, it is not a direct measurement of the air to fuel ratio that is actually entering your engine, because the PCM has no way to know exactly how much fuel is entering the engine. It has a general idea based on calibration, but does not know the exact amount. The PCM does know how much air is entering your engine (by way of the mass airflow sensor or MAF) and as such knows that roughly 20% of that is oxygen. In order to run at peak efficiency, achieve complete combustion, and keep emissions to a minimum the ideal (or stoichiometric) air to fuel ratio is 14.7 to 1. For a given MAF reading (along with other factors such as intake air temperature, coolant temperature, engine load etc.) the PCM will command a calibrated amount of fuel to be injected to the engine. By observing the O2 sensor the PCM can deduce whether the mixture was richer than needed (high O2 sensor voltage reading indicating low oxygen content in the exhaust stream) or leaner than needed (low 02 sensor voltage reading indicating high oxygen content in the exhaust stream). From this, the PCM will adjust the fuel injector on time to try to attain the ideal stoichiometric air to fuel ratio. If the adjustments necessary to achieve stoichiometry fall outside of a calibrated limit, then rich or lean diagnostic trouble codes are usually set. In short THE SENSOR IS MOST LIKELY DOING ITS JOB CORRECTLY. Again, post back with make, model, and year to get more assistance, especially for the P0321 code.

Question : Which fuse is for cigarette lighter and engine code reader on my 2004 chevy Silerado 1500 LS?
I have a 2004 chevy Silerado 1500 LS. The cigarette lighter and the engine code reader are not working on it. I am told by someone that they both have a common fuse and it might be blown. The truck have two fuse boxes and I can't figure out which fuse is the one for the cigarette lighter and code reader. How can I know which fuse is it? Thanks.

Answer:
it is the same fuse in the under hood fuse block on L side, says cig

Question : Possible cause of Check engine light on a 2000 Daewoo lanos?
I will probably need to put a code reader on it, but I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what the cause of their check engine light was. 2000 Daewoo Lanos, 4cyl. Thanks.

Answer:
It needs to be hooked to a diagnostic machine. It could be anything from a vacuum leak to an electrical problem. No way to tell without the code from the engine computer.

Question : My 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan is sputtering. New fuel injector needed?
I have a 1998 Grand Caravan, 3.8 liter, 80,000 miles. A month ago my car started hesitating and sputtering. The sputtering got so bad that the car wouldn’t even accelerate when I gave it gas, acting like it was flooded with fuel. It even backfired a little and produced a heavy fuel smell inside and outside the car. The “Service Engine Soon” light came on and I took it to the mechanic so they could read the trouble code. The “engine code reader” said that there was a problem with the fuel injector in the fifth cylinder and that the fuel injector was misfiring. The mechanics first replaced the spark plugs and spark plug cables. A few days later tho, the “Service Engine” light came on again with the same trouble code. They replaced the fuel injector in the 5th cylinder and again we got the same trouble code: bad fuel injector in the 5th cylinder. They then replaced the ignition coil, but this did not solve the problem either. The mechanics are baffled. Can you help?

Answer:
Mine did the same thing. It was the fuel filter which was located inside the fuel tank.

Question : 1996 ram 1500 w/fault code 3 . nothing on obd code reader. ignition difficult first try of the day then ok??
1996 Dodge ram 1500 5.2L (carb.) first start try of the day the solenoid just clicks, I wait a few seconds and try again sometimes it starts and other times it takes a few tries before the engine starts. Weird, sometimes no sound, sometimes a click and then other times the starter actually engages for a split second or so . After it starts I have no more problem with it unless I leave it sit for several hours or so and then we start the whole process over again. Nothing shows on the code reader but the ignition switch code shows only a 3 and then the 55.
